Description
The birds of paradise are members of the family Paradisaeidae of the order Passeriformes. Most species are found in Papua New Guinea, including West Papua and its satellites, with a few in the Maluku Islands and eastern Australia. The family has forty-one species in 14 genera.[1] The members of this family are perhaps best known for the plumage of the males of the sexually dimorphic species (the majority), particularly the highly elongated and elaborate feathers extending from the beak, wings, tail, or head. For the most part, they are confined to dense rainforest habitats. The diet of all species is dominated by fruit and, to a lesser extent, arthropods. The birds of paradise have a variety of breeding systems, ranging from monogamy to lek-type polygamy.
The family is of cultural importance to the inhabitants of New Guinea Island. The trade-in skins and feathers of the birds of paradise have been going on for two thousand years. The birds have also greatly interested Western collectors, ornithologists, and writers. Several species are threatened by hunting and habitat loss.
This 50s X 70s cm painting was one of my favorite artworks in May 1994 when I was in Jayapura, the capital of West-Papua province. This kind of sacred bird symbolizes the Papuan daily living style among the nations, isolated and unknown people in the world, hidden in the valleys, mountains, rivers, and jungles of land that prevent and save our planet from global warming. The international community considers it the lung oxygen storage for the safety of our earth. I have chosen this subject to express my feelings on behalf of my people, who have been groaning for a long time for their freedom. Please take a look at that bird. It looks like he hopes for a savior who will bring salvation and freedom to his land as if he said: I look to the mountains; where will my help come from?
My help will come from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
This painting has been given to my wife's family in Manado for personal collection since June 1994. However, it can go on the market based on family approval. Thank you for enjoying this painting.
