Description
Kingfisher bird, in Bahasa Indonesia, we usually call it "raja udang" (king shrimp), which is a general term for the type of these fish-eating birds from the Alcedinidae family. There are 90 species of kingfisher birds worldwide, scattered in tropical areas such as Africa, Asia, the South Pacific as well as the Northern part of Australia. Half of them, namely 45 species, can be found in Indonesia.
This one is called River Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), mostly found in South Kalimantan, just because of its whole land geographically flat and open, and there are so many small rivers, canal, lake, which of course, invite the attention of this bird to inhabit. This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts, and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish caught by diving and has particular visual adaptations to enable it to see prey underwater.
