Description
The Horsfield's babbler (Malacocincla septaria) is a species of bird in the Pellorneidae family. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia (in Java and Bali), Malaysia, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
There are three types of babblers present in Bali: Pearl-cheeked Babbler, Chestnut-backed Scimitar-Babbler, and Horsfield's Babbler.
The babblers are the old world family of the Indomalayan tropical region. Generally relatively low flyers, they tend to stay near the ground in dense cover, seldom coming into the open. Notoriously tricky to watch, it is frustrating to have a flock of these birds muttering and grumbling in bushes a few feet away, yet to be unable to catch even a fleeting glimpse of one of them. Of the three species of babbler recorded fro Bali and here illustrated, Hirshfield's is the most widely distributed, and it is very much a jungle Babbler, a relict population is locally common in the thick vegetation on ravine walls.
Its presence is betrayed by the shaking of plant stems on which it lights. By its peculiar utterances, a series of hoarse kwik tones interspersed with muffled bickering and melodious whistled snatches. There seems to be some plumage variation, and more than one race may exist in Bali, but generally, it is a nondescript, short-tailed, plump, noisy-brown bird; whitish underneath, with buffy flanks and dark greyish head
