Artist's Description
We called it the "Angel bird" because it was first discovered by Alfred Russel Wallace on Bacan Island, North Moluccas, in 1858. Wallace called it a bird of paradise due to the beauty of this bird. It was then written in a report and sent to England. A year later, his report became one of the ornithology study materials in the UK.
This bird was then specified within the family of Paradisaeidae, with genus and species names Semioptera Wallacii. This name was an appreciation of Wallace, a British naturalist who lived from 1823 - 1913.
