Description
This painting is the taxi station of Jayapura, the capital province of West Papua, Indonesia. All taxi passengers come from every direction, such as from Abepura, Kotaraja, Entrop, and other far distant places outside the city have to transit here and ride another green or blue taxi into the city of Jayapura. In contrast, the large building with its magnificent dome standing over a hill about 200 meters from the station is the Indonesia Bethel Church. It looks like a Mosque as seen from a distance. But the more you come up closer, and you will see there are four crosses set up on the top of four towers at every corner of the building while the largest one is standing proudly at the top of the dome.
Most of the church buildings in Papua are built up by such style. Some Papuan pastors were inspired after they visited some Middle Eastern-style church buildings found in Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth, Jerusalem, and other places after they have made their spiritual tour in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel.
The old Europe Baroque-style building gradually disappeared from Papua and was replaced with the Middle Eastern-style church building.
