Sago is the staple food of the tribes inhabiting the South Pacific region, including the Eastern part of Indonesia. One of the largest ethnic groups, Melanesians, inhabit several of the most significant Islands in the area, including Papua, Salomon, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, etc. This young Melanesian mother is processing sago. There are several steps to produce sago flour. Firstly, Sago stems, which are around six to ten years old, must be cut down, and their bark is peeled; the inside of the tree is forged using a wooden ax to shatter and form fibers. Then, the sago palm fibers are mixed with water and squeezed like coconut milk. Its pollen then flows through a channel made from sago fronds and stays quiet in a big container made of sago fronds for several days. The traditional bag placed on the sago frond channel is prepared for sago flour and is ready to bring home. The bag is made of palm stalk fronds. !
