This is Kampung Baru, in the West part of Sorong City. The image was captured by me in 2011 and then painted in 2016 with "Winton & Newton Oil, one of my favorite oil mediums for painting. This is a quality oil, I suppose, though expensive. This work shows two large islands, Salawati and Bantata, located between the Dampir Bay and the Pacific Ocean. We can see the Raja Ampat Islands here if the weather is clear. The Dampir Bay is a bustling waterway for ships from Indonesia and overseas—all the large or small ships must pass through the only Sagawin Strait. The Batanta and Salawati Islands flank Sagawin Strait itself. Sagawin Strait is popularly known as "The Only Entrance to the Land of Papua."
Sorong is the second-largest city in Papua after Jayapura, the capital of West Papua Province. The city is known as the Oil City, where Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea Petroleum Maatschappij (NNGPM) began to conduct petroleum drilling activities in Sorong in 1935. Sorong is a strategic...
